PROMISCUOUS LESSONS IN PROSE
AND POETRY.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
but the fool despise wisdom and instruction.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and for-
sake not the law of thy mother.
Trust in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not
unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknow-
ledge him, and He shall direct thy paths.
Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the Lord, and de-
part from evil.
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are
the issues of life.
These six things does the Lord hate; yea, seven are
an abominafton unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises
wicked imaginations, feet which are swift in running to
mischief, a false witness who speaks lies, and him who
sowes discord among brethren.
A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son is
the heaviness of his mother.
Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteous-
ness delivers from death.
The fear of the Lord prolongs days; but the years of
the wicked shall be shortened.
A false balance is abomination to the Lord; but a just
weight is his delight.
Who loves instruction loves knowledge; but he that hates
reproof is brutish.
Better is a little with righteousness, than great reve-
nues without right.
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he, that
speaks lies, shall perish.
