Lesson 11.
Hearken to thy fa-ther, and des-pise not thy mo-ther
when she is old: re-joice not when thy foes fall, and let
not thy heart be glad when they stum-ble, lest the Lord
see it, and it dis-please him, and he turn a-way his wrath
from them; en-vy not the wick-ed, for there shall be no
re-ward to them, but their light shall be put out.
Lesson 12.
THE WAY TO PLEASE.
Lit-tle Hen-ry was sent to school to learn read-ing,
wri-ting, and ac-counts. One day, af-ter his re-turn, his
fa-ther found him in the par-lour, with his eyes red and
full of tears. He ask-ed him what was the mat-ter. "Why,
fa-ther," said Hen-ry, "I wish to stay at home, and not
go to school, for my mas-ter of-ten finds fault.
"I thought I might have had more of my own way
there than at home, but I find I am some-times blam-ed
for not put-ting my books by; some-times for com-ing in
with my hat on, or not mak-ing a bow; some-times for
leav-ing the door o-pen; and, to-day, he would not let
me come home to din-ner, till a whole half hour af-ter
all the boys had left the school-room, be-cause I had
come late.
"Am I to be scokl-ed, and shut up, and u-sed in this
man-ner? I hope, fa-ther, you will com-plain to him,
or else let me re-main at home, and be taught by my
